Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series
Announces Schedule Changes
Lucas
Oil Press Release
For Immediate Release
January 5th, 2009
Corona, CA (January 5, 2009) - The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series
officials have announced a few changes to the 2009 tour schedule.
LOLMDS officials have been in contact with the promoters of Tri-City
Speedway and Brownstown Speedway in regards to the "Colossal
100" at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway. The series has
the best interest of the promoters and competitors in mind and Brownstown
Speedway has opted to move the "Indiana Icebreaker" from
its traditional weekend to Saturday Night March 21st. The series has
sanctioned this event at the Legendary Brownstown Speedway since it's
beginning in 2005. The "Indiana Icebreaker" has become a
must see event and is best known for being the season opener in the
northern part of the country.
"We were told by the staff at Lowes Motor Speedway that they
would continue to use their mid-April date as normally scheduled,
prior to the release of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series '09 schedule,"
stated Series Director, Ritchie Lewis; "since then, we found
out that Lowes Motor Speedway had other scheduling conflicts that
caused them to move their event off of its traditional weekend."

TWIN CITIES AWARD BANQUET IS JANUARY 17
Twin Cities Raceway Park will hold their annual awards banquet on
January 17, 2009 at the VFW on Jackson Park Drive in Seymour. The
cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids twelve and under; and tickets
must be purchased in advance.
Awards banquets like Twin Cities’ are very popular with the fans
as well as the competitors. They give the fans an opportunity to meet
the drivers and car owners while they aren’t under pressure to get
their cars ready for the next race. Of course they can also meet several
drivers at the same place; and it is an ideal time to get autographs.
The banquets are popular with the drivers and car owners because
this is typically the time that points money is distributed. Also,
this is a great place to praise their sponsors and crew members. Many
car owners will invite their sponsors to join them at the banquet.
Making the sponsors feel like they are really a part of the team.
This is a great time to close the deal for the next season if that
hasn’t already been done.
Twin Cities’ 2008 points leaders are:
Crate Late Model – Zak Blackwood of Columbus is the Crate Late Model
champion. He moved up from karts to crate late models in 2007 at the
age of thirteen. That’s a pretty big move for any racer; but, for
a driver who is three years away from being old enough to legally
drive a passenger car, it is huge. However, Zak met the challenge
and won the championship in 2008. In addition to the fact that he
is obviously a very talented driver, he has amazing poise for his
age. This has almost certainly helped him line up an impressive number
of sponsors.
Zak advises that his plans are to compete in crate late models again
this season; but he believes that he is ready to move up to either
open late models or other classes should the opportunity present itself.
Other Crate Late Model points leaders are: 2. Jim Moon, 3. Eric Varner,
4. Mark Barber of North Vernon, 5. Tyler Allen, 6. Mike Bechelli of
Elizabethtown, 7. Kyle Herbert, 8. Shannon Allen, 9. Justin Shaw,
and 10. Steve Godsey
Super Stock – Tim Clark of North Vernon is the Super Stock champion.

STEWART & CICCONI SPLIT RUMBLE IN FORT WAYNE
SERIES
Friday Night --
Tony Stewart has generally reserved the end of December and the first
of January for indoor racing, first at the Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum
Expo Center and later at Tulsa Expo Raceway in Tulsa, Okla. These
two events have served as Tony’s last two opportunities to go play
in the dirt with his friends. However, when Tony’s name failed to
appear on the entry list for the Chili Bowl, there was speculation
that Emmett Hahn and Lanny Edwards may have decided that, since the
Chili Bowl has been sold out since May, they might not need to pony
up appearance money for the pride of Columbus. However, it is probably
more likely that the hassles of starting his own race team may have
left insufficient time in his schedule to win his third Chili Bowl
championship. He will, however, be on hand to view at least part of
the competition and, while he’s at it, cheer for Tracy Hines and Levi
Jones.
In Friday night’s Rumble opener, Tony and his beautiful black Munchkin
got their evening off to a good start when they set quick time of
8.037 seconds ahead of second quick Billy Wease who turned the 1/6
mile circle in 8.097 seconds. Tony had trouble in the first heat race
and finished sixth; however, he came back to win the first hooligan.-

New design ‘Super Late Model’
to be “unveiled” at FASTRAK Points Banquet!
-
Submitted by Michael Hurley
©2008 FASTRAK Racing Series. All rights reserved
Carnesville, GA (Dec-31)The annual FASTRAK National Points Banquet
being held at the Sheraton Music City hotel in Nashville TN on Saturday
January 24th is known nationally as the venue whereby FASTRAK Grand
National Champions, National Weekly Champions and Regional Champions
are acknowledged and presented tremendous sums of money for their
accomplishments. The Grand National Champion alone, Royce Bray, will
be awarded over $50,000 in cash and prizes.
Seminars will take place during the week starting with Regional Directors
on Thursday, Weekly Tracks Friday and race teams on Saturday. Saturday
will also be the day of the technical seminars for weekly tracks across
the country. The awards banquet will take place in the evening honoring
all that come.
This year, at the very end of the points banquet comes what may be
the biggest announcement of all with the “unveiling” of a brand new
type of Super Late Model. A somewhat radical looking Super Late Model
that will no doubt be aerodynamically superior to the current configuration
car. To balance it off, will be a new 417 CU IN all aluminum power
plant producing 800 + HP and selling for a projected $18,000.00.
The new Super Late Model engine program will involve aftermarket
manufacturers and engine builders throughout the country allowing
everyone to participate in the program starting in 2010. As many as
4 cars will be debuting with the FASTRAK “crate” Late Model Series
in the Southeast United States at touring events during 2009 with
a scheduled (3) $10,000 to win races happening closer to the end of
the 2009 season for the new style cars. Sponsors and investors have
stepped forward to make sure the three races will happen in 09. -

and Steve Kinser battle for the win for the second consecutive night
on a bullring, with Haudenschild coming out on top after getting around
the 20-time series champion in heavy lapped traffic at the high-banked
1/3-mile.
“It is very fun to race with Steve,” shared Haudenschild after the
win. “The car felt good all night. We ran second to him last night
and we are happy to win tonight. Leonard (Lee) has the car really
fast right now. We really enjoy running these tight bullring tracks

Joe Whisler, Driver of #21 superstock
Dirt Scoops Showcase this week!
-
Victoria Owens (December 30, 2008)
"One
thing, Mr. Joe Whisler, definitely a colorful personality on and off
the track. His quick wit constantly keeps you in a state of smiling/laughing.
Always one to slip in a joke here and there, and give a good ribbing,
Joe is the life of the party. Joe has earned the respect and friendship
of a lot of fellow race car drivers and a lot of fans.
And, guess
what girls, he is single.
Joe usually
could be found in his cool blue and white superstock at LPS, but ventured
to Bloomington a few time in 2008. Joe has had the pleasure of standing
in victory row a few times, so he is no stranger at winning.
I have
had the pleasure of getting to know the 'guy' behind the wheel, and
his heart is a good one. He is currently in the superstock class,
but his dream is to get in to sprints. He follows them religiously.
I would personally like to thank Joe for being a loyal Dirt Scoops
member, and to wish him the best of luck in 2009, and in what ever
racing brings him!
Now, on
to the interview!"

The Shinnston, W.Va.-based manufacturer ruled the World of Outlaws
Late Model Series once again in 2008, winning the national tour’s
Chassis Builders Challenge Award for the fifth consecutive season.
Rocket remains the only company to capture the top chassis builders’

but modestly deflected.
“That’s what they tell me,” a smiling Richards said when asked about

SCHMEH HONORED FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION
Thomas J. Schmeh, curator of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame
Museum was recently honored as the 2008 recipient of the Outstanding
Contribution to the Sport award. This is a once in a lifetime award
as repeat winners are not allowed.
Schmeh started conducting polls ranking sprint car drivers, teams,
media members, and a host of other participants in 1985 from his home
in Utica, New York. Schmeh was named the executive director of the
National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Museum Foundation in 1989. The compilation
of the polls moved with Schmeh to the museum located in Knoxville,
Iowa. Until 2000 the polls represented all types of sprint car racing;
however, in 2000, the polls were reorganized to create a separate
poll for 410 Winged Sprint Car racing, 360 winged sprint car racing,
and non winged sprint car racing. Members of all three polls vote
for the recipient of the “Outstanding Contribution” award. - Read

evidence to the contrary, the USAC champion would normally be named
Driver of the Year. However, the 2007 Driver of the Year was Jon Stanbrough
who, of course, was not the USAC champion. He failed to win the USAC
championship because he didn’t have a pavement ride; however, he generally
whipped up on the USAC faithful when he raced against them.
Coons received twelve of the eighteen first place votes. Other drivers
receiving first place votes were Dave Darland with four votes and

It seems a safe bet that we’ll have another record field of competitors
this year.
A Race of Champions has been added to Tuesday night’s (January 13)
opening program. Those locked into the race now are Jay Drake, Damion
Gardner, Scott Hatton, Tracy Hines, Cory Kruseman, Tim McCreadie,

Home For The Holidays: How The
World of Outlaws Late Model Series Stars Are Spending Their Rare Time
Off
-
Kevin Kovac, World of Outlaws Late Model Series P.R. Director
CONCORD, NC – Dec. 24, 2008 – The holiday season is a rare joy for
the stars of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series – a once-a-year
stretch during which the busy fulltime professional race car drivers
absolutely, positively don’t have any competitive events keeping them
away from home.
So how are the top 10 drivers in the 2008 WoO LMS points standings
taking advantage of their time off? For the most part, they’ll be
catching up with family and friends.
No WoO LMS regular, of course, has a larger family than veteran Chub
Frank – and thus no driver hosts a bigger holiday bash than the 46-year-old
owner/operator who finished fifth in the national tour’s 2008 points
standings. -Read

TWIN CITIES TO CROWN CHAMPIONS JANUARY 17
-
(RE-posted
Dec. 27, 2008) By Jaime Gregory
Vernon, IN – When
the 2008 race season started back in April at Twin Cities Raceway
Park in beautiful Vernon Indiana, no one would have thought that among
those that would be crowned as champions would be a fifteen year old,
a rookie, or even a repeat champion from last year. Each and every
driver at Twin Cities put all they had into competing for a win this
year but there would only be eight drivers that would come out on
top and be crowned as champions in their class. Some of these drivers
proved that you don’t have to win every week, or even at all
for that matter, you just need to be consistent and full of determination

COONS & CLAUSON WIN AT KEMPER
Jerry Coons, Jr. of Tucson used his talent on the dirt and a state
of the art Spike/Toyota to hold off the hard charging Bryan Clauson
and score the feature win on Saturday morning in Kemper Arena in Kansas
City. The feature was pushed to Saturday morning by what must be the
mother of all curfews. Most tracks covered by curfews do their best
to get their shows run without violating the curfews; however, with
the delays inherent in auto racing, shows just sometimes run long.
In those cases most tracks either work out an exception with the enforcers
or just pay the fine.
A total of 82 cars were on hand for the first night of the two day
show. They were divided into nine eight lap heat races which were
won by Eddie Martin, Dave Darland, Chris Walker, Brad Loyet, Kevin
Swindel, Cory Kruseman, Chris Windom, Andrew Felker, Brad Kuhn, and
Coons.
The 8 laps “D” hooligans went to Davey Ray and Bubba Altig while
Dave Camfield, Jr. and Caleb Armstrong took the “C” hooligans. Kuhn
and Coons won the two 12 lap “B” hooligans. Read

BARBERVILLE, FL – Dec. 21, 2008 – It’s never too early for a driver
to start thinking about an upcoming event at a track where he excels.
So it goes with Josh Richards, the young World of Outlaws Late Model
Series sensation who heads into the holidays with visions of February’s
38th annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park
dancing through his head.
Richards, 20, has a sparkling performance record at the fast half-mile
oval outside Daytona Beach, which hosts 12 consecutive nights of DIRTcar
racing from Feb. 3-14. Dirt Late Models will headline six programs,
including four UMP DIRTcar Racing-sanctioned events (Feb. 9, 10, 11
and 13) and two World of Outlaws Late Model Series shows (Feb. 12
and 14).
“Volusia definitely ranks up there as one of my favorite tracks,”
said Richards, a product of Shinnston, W.Va., who won the 2008 WoO
LMS season opener at Volusia en route to a career-high second-place
finish in the national tour’s points standings. “I like wide-open
places where you can carry a lot of momentum, and that’s how you race
there. It just fits my style.” Read

Motorsports in 2009!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
December 20, 2008
-Chris Knight
(MOWEAQUA, ILLINOIS) Following his split with Clint Bowyer Racing
last week, Dirt Late Model ace Shannon Babb has turned his focus to
owning and operating his own team in 2009. The 34-year-old Moweaqua,
Illinois native has driven for various car owners over the past decade,
so the switch to car ownership will be a daunting task. However, the
transition was made easier today with the announcement that Shannon
Babb Racing has joined forces with Sheltra Motorsports for the 2009

“I am very excited today to announce this partnership with Sheltra
Motorsports,” exclaimed Babb today while returning home from a hunting
trip to Mexico and Texas. “Richard, Grace, and everyone associated
with Sheltra Motorsports are excellent people and it is a privilege
for me to be aligned with their first-class organization. With Patrick
(Sheltra) running primarily on asphalt, the decision was made to reallocate
some of their dirt assets. They will be providing me with some equipment
and manpower, which will make my transition to car owner a lot easier!”
Sheltra Motorsports (sheltramotorsports.com) is a three-tier Motorsports
operation consisting of dirt and asphalt competition. Patrick Sheltra,
a 22-year-old native of Indiantown, Florida competes on dirt with
the UMP DIRTcar Series, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, and
the World of Outlaws Late Model Series (No. 23); while also running
a full schedule in the ARCA RE/MAX Series (No. 60) and a limited schedule
in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Sheltra Motorsports ownership is

WHITT NAMED USAC’S “MOST IMPROVED”
DRIVER OF 2008
-
Dick Jordan
Cole Whitt of Alpine, Calif., who earned the 2008 USAC Mopar National
Midget
Championship by the narrowest margin in USAC National racing history
(a single
point), has been named the “Most Improved Driver” in USAC racing for
2008.
Whitt, at age 17, became the youngest National driving champion
in USAC history
when he edged Tracy Hines 1,196 to 1,195 points by finishing 11th
in this year’s
“Turkey Night Grand Prix” at Irwindale, Calif. November 27.
In addition to his Midget title, Cole also finished fourth in the
USAC National
Sprint Car series standings. In June at Minersville, Pa. he became
the youngest
driver ever to win a USAC National Sprint race, eclipsed two nights
later by Chad
Boat at Hagerstown, Md.
The 2008 season was Whitt’s second in USAC National competition.
In 2007 he

Liberal adds IMCA Modifieds,

LIBERAL, Kan. (Dec. 18) – Promoter Ed Beckley brought IMCA-sanctioned
Modifieds and Stock Cars to Dodge City Raceway Park to considerable
acclaim this race season.
He’s looking forward to doing the same again in 2009, when the
two
divisions join monthly and fair week programs at the Liberal
Fairgrounds Speedway in southwest Kansas, 60-odd miles from Dodge
City and a stone’s throw from the Oklahoma state border.
“It makes all the sense in the world to have IMCA at both tracks,”
said Beckley, who brought his Checkered Flag Productions company
from
Texas back to the Midwest when he returned as promoter at Dodge
City
and now at Liberal. “IMCA needs a stronger presence in this part
of
the state and sanctioning both tracks gives us a solid base. The
area
is very race-oriented and I knew that sanctioning would help get
this
track back on the map. This track has been one of the best kept

Annual UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals
‘Hell Tour’ Showcases 27 Dirt Late Model Races in 31 Days
- Kellen Burns, DIRTcar PR
ORLANDO, FL — Dec. 12, 2008 — The 21st annual UMP DIRTcar Summer
Nationals tour is the most grueling month in any form of motorsports.
The 2009 series — also known as the “Hell Tour” — is one of the most
challenging in history with 27 Super Dirt Late Model races in 31 days.
More than anything, the schedule released this week at the Performance
Racing Industry Trade Show is a matter of survival, a true reality
show. The Summer Nationals is a journey that pits man and his machine
against the best dirt tracks in the Midwest. It’s the series that
helped to launch the legendary careers of Billy Moyer and Scott Bloomquist,
as well as current World of Outlaws Late Model Series star Shannon
Babb.“Running the Summer Nationals tour is one of the toughest things
a Dirt Late Model team can attempt,” said UMP DIRTcar Racing Director
Sam Driggers. “To accomplish the feat, to survive to finale at Oakshade,
is an accomplishment that won’t be forgotten. Whether it’s the racers,
the officials or the fans, the tour showcases everything that’s great
about dirt track racing.”The month of hell kicks off June 11 at Indiana’s
Brownstown Speedway. It winds through Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois,
Tennessee and Missouri before reaching the championship night on July
11 with the 12th Annual “Birthday Race” at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon,
Ohio. -Read

Looking Back: Facts, Figures
& Statistical Notes From The 2008 World of Outlaws Late Model Series
-
Kevin Kovac, World of Outlaws Late Model Series P.R. Director
CONCORD, NC – Dec. 2, 2008 – With the 2008 World of Outlaws Late
Model Series ‘Night of Champions’ Awards Banquet approaching on Dec.
11 at the International Plaza Resort & Spa in Orlando, Fla., here’s
an inside look back at the season that was on the nation’s premier
dirt Late Model tour…
QUINTET: With his 2008 championship, Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky.,
joined an exclusive club of five drivers with WoO LMS points titles.
He stands alongside Billy Moyer (1988, 1989, 2005), Scott Bloomquist
(2004), Tim McCreadie (2006) and Steve Francis (2007).
WHAT A SEASON: Lanigan parlayed an amazing string of consistency
into the largest championship-winning margin since the tour’s current
points system came into use in 2004, defeating Josh Richards of Shinnston,
W.Va., by a resounding 160 points.
Notable is the fact that Lanigan became the second champ in a row
to clinch the title in the season’s next-to-last race, following Steve
Francis of Ashland, Ky., who ended the 2007 campaign with a then-record
championship margin of 126 points. The consecutive points runaways
come after the 2004-2006 seasons featured dramatic points battles
that went down to the final race.
Lanigan built his commanding advantage by topping several key statistical
categories during the 2008 season, which saw 43 A-Mains contested.
